The Fire Space:
The SJC fire space will run on Friday and Sunday evening from 7pm-9:30pm.
You can use the space before these times but no fire will be permitted, after 9:30pm we will turn off any music and ask the participants to head inside, this is to avoid noise issues with the residencies that back onto the fire space.
Please respect this time limitation as we would like to be invited back.
The Rules:
- Be sober, no drugs or alcohol.
- No fire breathing.
- No lit staff fuel burn-off or flares.
- No fuel additives or sparkling effects.
- No fire props within the building, even if covered.
- No campfires or BBQs.
- No dogs/pets/animals (we don’t want them hurt)
- Treat the Fire Safety Personel with respect and listen to their requests.
- Lit/fueled fire props are only allowed within the fire space.
- The red buckets/towels are for emergency use only. Do not extinguish props using them unless someone is tangled or on fire.
Failure to follow these rules will result in exclusion from the fire space.
Safety:
The fire space is insured through the organisers personal Equity insurance for general public liability, but all liability for participation within the fire space is assumed by the individual, there will be a safety briefing and a disclaimer to sign before anyone is allowed within the fire space.
Simply put, we will do as much as we can to make sure the fire space is safe and we will assist should anything untoward happen but any injury or damage as a result of your participation is entirely your own risk and we will not be held accountable. If this does not fit your needs please either ensure you have your own insurance or do not participate in the fire space.
We will have two people monitoring the fire space, one in the fuelling area and another dedicated spotter.
Our fire space can accommodate roughly 6 people performing at once but we maintain the right to adjust that as needed based on the current performers space and spotting requirements.
The safety of the fire space is all of our responsability, please make sure you are in control of yourself and aware of others around you.
Talk to us if:
- You have specific accessability requirements.
- You have trained in body trails/fire eating and wish to do this. You will need to have your own insurance for this.
- Your prop is custom/unique or can take up large amounts of space (for example: rope dart)
This will allow us to have a reasonable conversation with you about your intentions and prop, we will assess wheather or not we feel it is safe and how we can accommodate/spot your participation safely. This may include lowering the number of people in the fire space while you perform or additional safety measures.
If it is decided by the fire space organisers that your intended activity is not something we can support for any reason then you will be asked not to perform the activity. Failure to accept this will lead to exclusion from the fire space.
What to Expect:
For any experienced fire performers, we will run a short safety briefing to make sure eveyone is doing the same things and ask you to read/sign the disclaimer. Once this is done you will be given a wrist band and allowed to enter the fire space.
For any participants new to fire performing we will run a longer safety workshop that will include more detailed information about fire performing. After this we will run a 30 minute "beginners only" fire session where we can give you more dedicated attention and set you up for as safe a fire experience as we can.
Within the fire space we will have red buckets with clean water and red towels inside them, these are strictly for emergency use only and are the primary method of extinguishing should something go wrong. Please do not use them for anything else, black towels will be provided for extinguishing your props normally.
The fire space will have a marked out area for lit props, a fueling station, and prop racks.
We will be using paraffin fuel and the short dip fueling method with no prolonged soaking kit. Every effort will be made to avoid fuel contamination on the ground by providing spin off tins and tubes. Talk to us if you have any unusual fueling requirements.
At some point during the convention we will run a workshop on fire spotting/safety personel. If you have never done one we would strongly recommend anyone interested in fire performing at any level to attend. Even if you have no intention of being a fire spotter, being aware of the processes the fire sporters/safety personel are using will make your own reactions in a bad situation better.
